PMC Attends NAMM Fly-In

PERCUSSION MARKETING COUNCIL Participates in 2012 NAMM Music Advocacy Washington D.C. Fly-In

From March 26 through 29^th, members of NAMM met with members of Congress and the Department of Education as part of its eighth annual Advocacy Fly-in for Music Education event in Washington, D.C. to support issues concerning the music products industry. The PMC’s Co-Executive Director, Karl Dustman represented the PMC at all meetings and events. His direct involvement included pre-scheduled meetings at the offices of Senators, Rob Portman (R-OH), Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Congresswoman Betty Sutton (D-Oh-13^th)

During the advocacy meetings, NAMM Members asked that Congress reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education Act in a manner that removes the pressures in current law that force schools to narrow the curriculum at the expense of important core academic subjects, such as music and arts education, and to support a well-rounded education for all students.

“NAMM Members came from around the country to speak with members of Congress and policy makers about the importance of a quality, school-based music and arts education for all students,” said Joe Lamond, president and CEO of NAMM. “In addition to the proven link between music and academic success in other subjects like math and literacy, a well-rounded education that includes the arts helps prepare students for the 21st century workforce where a premium is placed on creativity, innovation and the ability to work in teams.”

Dustman commented, “The PMC was the only music industry trade association that participated in this year’s FLY-IN. Our Executive Committee felt very strongly that the PMC organization and its members need to be seen, heard and recognized as a strong stake-holder in the future of Music Education throughout the United States. I was honored to be selected to make this trip and communicate our strong beliefs in the essential connection of music education and the music products industry that the PMC is part of. This also allowed me to introduce many of the PMC programs and activities to the many different attendees that never knew about the PMC or its educational programs.”

More than 25 NAMM Members were joined by Latin Grammy-nominated jazz guitarist and former NY Yankees legend Bernie Williams, as well as keyboardist and television star Scott Grimes, who met with approximately 70 Congressional and Senate offices and the Deputy Assistant Secretary, Office of Planning and Evaluation, with the U.S. Department of Education.

NAMM also hosted a reception and dinner as part of the fly-in in honor of Dr. Anne L. Bryant, executive director of the National School Boards Association (NSBA). NAMM presented Dr. Bryant with an award for her many contributions to supporting music and arts education at schools across the country.

The PMC will expand and continue its connection with the Members of Congress, NAMM officials and the many individuals from all aspects of our industry that attended and participated in this industry-wide event.

Special Needs Student Wins Award For Original Song Composition

Students Honored for Art Focused on Poverty

Winners of a multi-media art contest sponsored by Catholic Charities of Tennessee were announced on March 22 during a reception at St.Cecilia Academy. Students in grades 7-12 at area Catholic schools in Tennessee and local parishes submitted work inspired by the theme, “Put Faith in Action! Uproot Poverty Together,”
as part of the National Multi-Media Youth Arts Contest of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development
(CCHD).

Nicholas Taylor, an eighth grade student and private student of Zig Wajler, a PMC PITS facilitator, who is also a parishioner at St. Stephen Catholic Community, received an award for the Most Entertaining entry in the competition with his song and performance on CD, “St. Michael vs.Poverty.” Nicholas recorded his original lyrics and played keyboards on the song. Nicholas’s song and dedication exemplifies what can be achieved by any specials needs student.

PMC Ready For 2012 Vans Warped Tour!

The Percussion Marketing Council has announced plans to once again partner with Vans Warped Tour in the summer of 2012 to bring free drum lessons to select dates of the US tour. This will mark the third year that the PMC has been associated with Vans Warped Tour and it has been a huge success for the organization and it’s members. PMC Marketing coordinator Billy Cuthrell says the tour offers attendees the chance to have a free 5 minute drum lessons and introduce local retailers that partner with the PMC to the concert attendees. Cuthrell states, “This is great event for any PMC member and retailer to take advantage of, and from a cost perspective it’s affordable since the PMC covers almost all of the costs of the event. Where else can you spend a day and get your brand, store and image in front of 20,000 plus music fans in one place or practically nothing out of pocket?”

2011 International Drum Month Reaches Drummers

Hello Mr. Dustman,

The students, families and Staff of The Drummers’ Studio – Franklin, MA would like to personally thank the Percussion Marketing Council and all the supporting companies for promoting the art of drumming during International Drum Month.

We posted news about International Drum Month in our local paper and hosted a series of drum workshops that resulted in new students starting lessons.

The fact that an International Drum Month even existed came as a pleasant surprise to our newer students’ parents and gave them a great sense of pride, purpose and, I believe, helped everyone to understand that we’re all part of and connected to a global drumming community.

Thank you so very much for all PMC does to promote the gift and art of drumming.

Matrix Percussion Trio Completes Presentations to 6,500 Students

The Matrix Percussion Trio has just finished a series of school presentations in the greater Metropolitan Nashville area, funded by the Berklee College of Music (Boston, MA) Alumni grant program and the Percussion Marketing Council of Cleveland, Ohio. The group presented their program “We Are the World: Percussion Around the Globe” at fifteen elementary and middle schools to over 6500 students.
