International Drum Month Moves to May 2014
November 3, 2013—Following feedback from PMC members and requests from music retailers across the country, the Percussion Marketing Council (PMC) has decided to relaunch and revise the International Drum Month (IDM) program. The new International Drum Month will be celebrated annually, beginning in May 2014. This significant change in calendar placement offers a gateway for all retailers to get involved in more PMC market growth programs that extend throughout the summer months.
Using banner ads and Google Adwords, PMC will target a variety of young, diverse audiences that are potentially interested in drumming as a creative and healthy alternative lifestyle activity. Potential new drummers will be able to connect to a completely new, redesigned PlayDrums.com website 24/7—engaging them immediately with all aspects of drumming, instructional material, videos, and drummer profiles. PMC member website links will automatically connect new players seeking information about products, brands, and selection options.
The new International Drum Month program will reach beyond the music industry through targeted Internet marketing to create excitement for drums and drumming, while driving new drummer-customers into their local music store or drum shop. PMC member-sponsored information will be readily available on the new PMC website, as well as a list of participating retailers who are actively involved in the IDM campaign.
Billy Cuthrell, PMC Marketing and Promotions Advisory Board Member commented, “Our idea is to use the annual IDM program as a gateway to tie all the other market development PMC programs together through the new website. At the very center of the effort is creating a positive first-drumming introduction and experience that support all music retailers, and of course, our entire PMC membership. May has been identified as the best month for kicking off in-store related promotions that also tie into the summer tour schedules. IDM will become the starting point, connecting all the programs, instead of just an annual one-month campaign. It now extends through our Vans Warped Tour Lesson Lab program, Percussion In The Schools and other educational connections.”
The PMC is the percussion Industry’s official trade association open to all companies actively involved in the percussion business. It has been consistently recognized as the catalyst for much of the percussion industry’s resilience and new player growth. The organization’s activities and programs are focused on creating market expansion by promoting drumming to potential new players. Creating new interest and new audiences brings new customers into all music stores—the PMC’s mission goes way beyond selling more drums to existing drumming customers.
More details will be announced at the Annual All-member PMC Meeting, Friday, January 24, 2014 in conjunction with the 2014 Winter NAMM Show.

We are grateful for his time and interest in the PMC, as this has taken considerable time and effort to coordinate schedules. Without NAMM’s assistance this would not be possible.”
“The 2014 Annual PMC All-Member Meeting provides tremendous insight to the organization’s programs, campaigns and activities planned for 2014 and beyond. The addition of an internationally recognized music advocate like Governor Huckabee brings industry-wide attention to the efforts the PMC makes in creating new players and audiences for drums and drumming. This benefits all of our members and retail music merchants everywhere,” added Dustman.
The PMC has been recognized as the catalyst for much of the percussion industry’s growth and expansion through programs like International Drum Month, Roots of Rhythm, Percussion in the Schools, and Vans Warped Tour Drum Lessons Tent. The organization’s programs are focused on creating even more new players by focusing its educational marketing to all potential new drummers and connecting them with local music retailers.
“This is an excellent opportunity for everyone involved in the percussion industry to learn about the PMC, hear Governor Huckabee’s message to the PMC Members and to get involved with the industry’s initiatives and mission in growing the demand for all percussion merchandise,” Dustman commented.

Cleveland, OH—The Executive Committee of the Percussion Marketing Council (PMC) launched two new program initiatives during the January NAMM convention in Anaheim, California, directly addressing the need of growing and supporting drum set oriented members and firms in the percussion industry.
PMC spokesman, Karl Dustman commented, “The all-new ‘Friends of the PMC’ and ‘Drums Across America’ are unprecedented initiatives for the PMC. Under the campaign heading of ‘Get Involved,’ the PMC is connecting with the full tapestry of the drum industry by creating two specific programs geared directly to building the market for percussion products. PMC will be investing resources to provide more opportunities for companies, teachers, players, and retailers to support and get involved with the PMC.”
FRIENDS OF THE PMC brings a long-needed opportunity and answer to the many teachers, players, schools, studios, and retailers who’ve asked, “How can I get involved with the PMC and its programs?” Two new “Friends” categories have been created: “Partners” level of support will be directed to colleges, universities, retail music stores, drum shops, non-percussion publications, and music/percussion associations. The “Supporters” level of support will be directed to teachers, lesson studios, teaching websites, and individual players.
Friends of the PMC membership will have specific benefits and opportunities to host Percussion In The Schools, Roots of Rhythm, Vans Warped Tour Lesson Labs, Days of Percussion Lesson Labs, and other educational programs and events supporting the creation of new drummers and general public awareness of percussion and drumming.
DRUMS ACROSS AMERICA builds upon the tremendous three-year success of the PMC Free Drum Lesson Lab tent operations at select Vans Warped Tour summer venues. PMC Advisory Board Member Billy Cuthrell states, “We realized many more NAMM-member retailers wanted to get involved with the PMC’s Lesson Lab concept and now we are able to increase the Lesson Lab Tent activities through the entire calendar year. We will seek to partner with two or more retailers per month that see regional opportunities in hosting a Drums Across America free drum lesson lab tent in their local market.” The PMC’s mission in this ground-breaking alliance with qualified retailers is to create more players, thus developing more customers for hosting retailers in their local markets.
Drums Across America can be conducted at local arts/music festivals, shopping malls, school events like arts fairs, and related educational gatherings. Drums Across America free drum lesson lab program is designed exclusively for Friends of the PMC retail members. The lab tent will be shipped to and from their store location at no charge.
